Thank you Coach Judit @juditspiegl for arranging everything and to the kayakers and paddleboarders for taking care of us.

I am so proud of the Sasspots who came along - for most of them it was a first time event and also the longest swim to date. They also did it in under 2 hours which would put them in good stead for a long distance triathlon (never say never).

Rolling with the PTP ball after a short Zwift sess Rolling with the PTP ball after a short Zwift session. Quads, inner thighs, hammies, quads, hip flexors, calves, achilles, glutes, between my shoulder blades and also used the foam roller very briefly on my back.

And a nice hole in my @pdmpirates tri shorts.  They are 10 years old, however.

This week I got myself into a right pickle. Durin This week I got myself into a right pickle.  During the kettlebell class I did a push plank jump, and on jumping inwards my back cracked and sounded like marbles dropping on the floor. It felt somewhat nice but on the warm down, I became immobilised and couldn't get up.  There was a debilitating point in my back which caused massive pain.  Hip hinges were ok, walking was not. I looked back at the zoom footage and I see my pain..

We finished the class and I tried rolling it out.. which made it worse. #besthusbandever had to come in and help me up.

I went to go and see Dr James Boyle at DISC @disc.uae the following day, and he saw me right, put me in a brace and give strict instructions... it was a very painful session and I must say, self-inflicted.  My whole body was tight, my quads and calves were the tightest they have ever been, it's no wonder everything was in spasm.

His top tips for getting back into training after long illness or periods of immobility: (and also his advice from 2021 in point 2)

1.  Start from the ground up. How do you expect to do miles on a bike if you have no core strength? 😏 work on mobility, all the time.

2. Roll, every day.  Before and after exercise. If you don't exercise roll. 😏

3. Work on the core, build it slowly, do planks, dead bugs, working towards side planks, bird dogs... simple but effective. 😏

4. Use the massage gun, but wisely.

I woke up this morning and have been going about the house unassisted, and I've done all of the above.  I am not out of the woods yet, it's not simple.  The brace is awesome, but it's not a cure. Nothing is going to stop me from getting fitter and stronger - and I will listen this time.

I think during 2020-2021 I was at my fittest, especially during lockdown.

Training consistently on a turbo trainer can boost your maximum sustainable output by up to 12 percent, (said the former coach of Lance Armstrong Chris Carmichael). If this was the case for a pro athlete, then it's a comforting thought for us mere mortals... 

I will be Zwfiting once a week now and looking for buddies... sessions will be an hour to 90 minutes. Who would be keen?

For the last 4 months I've been on the Oceanman Op For the last 4 months I've been on the Oceanman Open Water Coach course which was fairly intensive involving plenty of written assignments, preparation of annual training plans and season planning, EAPs, physiology, techniques for open water and so much more. I received my pass last week, and I was grateful to find my certificate in the inbox today OCEANMAN Open Water Coach Certification.

It's an insightful course, some of it was covered already under my diving certification and also Ironman Coach and ASCA, and l learned a stack of new things as well.  The preparation and submission of assignments is a lot different to other certifications I have done.  Each module required a submission in writing, and not just answering a multiple choice exam.  They covered so many aspects of training and preparing athletes to compete at Open Water competition level. They provide lots of reading material, case studies and clinical studies, all very interesting and very useful.

I am really pleased to have done this course, and look forward to many more hours in the water with you, and very proud to be part of the Oceanman family. @armandos @jluislarrosa

I held an open water swimming clinic for anyone who wanted to get in the ocean for the first time after pool training, or who simply wanted to learn the techniques, safety and rescue procedures and increase their confidence in the open water.

Jebel Jais outing - my first one in a long time, a Jebel Jais outing - my first one in a long time, and my first mountain since September last year.

 @anniemcm_dubai came out as support driver and Ananda and I gave gave it a go.

It wasn't meant to be. I was frozen  at 13degC 🤷‍♂️ - way too cold for present lungs.  The body was not feeling the love... but it will!

There were the usual racing cars going up, but a lot of roadworks encroaching on the hard shoulder with no space for cyclists and the smell of tar was nasty. I don't need to be breathing in that!

Often, there was no staying out of the way of the weekend warriors (did I say warriors, I meant W⚓s) 🤣  two Mustangs raced up hogging the road causing a bit of a wobble.. I decided my life is worth more.

@djsisterrock had a mechanical too which they couldn't resolve which was a shame. Next time!

I bailed after an hour.  I'll be going during the week in the next couple of weeks if anyone keen, and later in the morning when it has warmed up 🤗

Learn when to pull back, do what's best for your health and safety. The mountain isn't going away.

Keshnee learned to ride from scratch in 5 lessons last winter. She then borrowed my bike through the summer for a few months and a few bumps later... she invested in her own bike from @adventurehq and is now fully committed to becoming a cyclist. She bought a gravel bike to be able to have adventurous options 😍

This year in June and July I plan to spend time in This year in June and July I plan to spend time in Spain racing and training.  We live in an area which is a fantastic training ground, including mountainous courses, MTB and gravel bike trails, ocean swims, kayaking on the river and also flat course options for your sprint work.  We have plenty of secure bike storage on the property, with space for you to also relax, fix up your bike, eat and braai with us as well.

If you fancy signing up for one or two of these races and would be interested in some training and acclimatization before racing, I can arrange accommodation for you in our village and we can so some training together before racing! The house is already full :)

Getting back to strength training after a hiatus c Getting back to strength training after a hiatus can be a very positive experience. Really it can.

Instead of thinking about what you can do for your body, think about what your body can do for you. It's stronger than you think, you just need to push it a little more, every time.

With just two kettlebells the same weight you can do Turkish Get-Ups and double TGU (a long time favourite of mine), overhead and weighted carries (Farmer's walks), Russian twists for weight rotation and the good old swings. 

Join my next class on Wednesday at 10h30 or 19h00 and give it go.

A chilly start and a steady 55km loop through Al Faya  ending with coffee ☕  at Wild Coffee ..

There's a cycle path that goes up the S102 and still under construction I think we did about 20km of it and then went out on to the road.

My open water swimming classes offer four key benefits:

Fear. Most new experiences start with fear and en Fear.  Most new experiences start with fear and end in sheer joy.

8 lessons ago, this wonderful lady began her cycling journey.  She was petrified.  She started off slowly, pushing the bike along with her feet.  Within a couple of days she was pedalling and now....

Did she fall a few times? Yes.
Did she get straight back on?  Yes.
Did she keep coming, and persevere?  Yes.
Did she invest in herself, and make the decision to keep going? Yes.

Now, she can ride, change gears, and is learning to lift her hands off the bike to able to do hand signals.

This is a lady with grit, determination, perseverance and courage.

Stuck for time? Get yourself doing a Turkish Get- Stuck for time?  Get yourself doing a Turkish Get-Up Routine.

Start naked (no weights) ;) and do 5 each side.  Then balance a shoe on your fist, and repeat.  Then hold a kettlebell (start light), and repeat.

To finish, do one rep each side with a heavier bell, see if you can!

When you are getting back into training after bein When you are getting back into training after being sick or injured, be smart about coming back.

Don't train where you think you could be or should be, train where you're at and build from there.  If you don't you're likely to set yourself back, and have to start again.
